If Buruanga is known for its beaches, Hacienda Maria is its hidden highland escape. Tucked inland, away from the coastline, this area offers a completely different experience, quiet trails, caves, waterfalls, and raw nature. It’s not commercial, not crowded, and not polished. That’s exactly the point.
Where is Hacienda Maria?
A highland nature escape inland from Buruanga’s coastal areas
Hacienda Maria is located in the highland area of Buruanga, Aklan, Philippines. It sits inland, away from the coastal barangays, and is surrounded by hills, forest, and natural formations.
It is approximately 6 to 8 kilometres from Buruanga Plaza, with an estimated travel time of around 20 to 30 minutes by motorcycle or tricycle, depending on road conditions.
It is not along the main tourist route, which is exactly why it still feels quiet, hidden, and less crowded than the usual coastal stops.
How to Get There
The access is straightforward, but the final part involves a trek
By Motorcycle / Habal-habal (Most Practical)
This is the easiest and most common way to reach Hacienda Maria. Ride from Buruanga proper toward the highland area and hire a habal-habal if needed.
~PHP 100–150 per person (one way)The road is partly paved and partly rough, with some uphill sections.
By Private Vehicle
The site is accessible by private car or motorbike, but some sections are narrow and uneven. It is best for drivers already comfortable with provincial roads.
Final Access Requires a Trek
You will not reach everything by vehicle. There is a short trek required to reach the caves and waterfalls. It is not extreme, but expect uneven paths, light climbing, and muddy areas on rainy days.
Entrance Fee
Still one of the most accessible nature spots in Buruanga
Entrance fee: Free
Local guides may be available. If it’s your first time, it’s best to ask locals or arrange help in advance.
What to Expect
Raw nature, not a polished tourist attraction
Hacienda Maria is not a resort or a fully developed tourist site. There are no reception areas, no organized facilities, and no commercial setup. What you get instead is raw nature, quiet surroundings, and a genuinely local experience.
What it feels like
This is the kind of place you visit because you want something more than a beach photo. It is for people who enjoy discovery, light trekking, and landscapes that still feel untouched.
Things to Do in Hacienda Maria
Nature, movement, and a different side of Buruanga
Explore the Caves
The area is known for its natural cave formations. Temperatures inside are cooler, with striking rock structures and naturally dark sections, so a flashlight or phone light is useful.
Visit the Waterfalls
Hidden waterfalls are part of the experience. They are surrounded by greenery, with fresh water and a more quiet, natural setting than commercial swimming spots.
Trek Through the Trails
Part of the attraction is the journey itself. Expect light trekking through forest paths, scenic views, and a more peaceful atmosphere with almost no crowd.
Experience Lambanog
Some locals produce lambanog, a traditional coconut spirit. It is not always sold in a formal way, but if available, it adds another layer to the rural Buruanga experience.
Best Time to Visit
Dry weather makes a big difference here
Best months: November to May, during the dry season.
Best time of day: Morning to early afternoon.
Avoid heavy rain days because the trails can get slippery, and avoid going too late in the day because there is no proper lighting in the cave areas.
Important Tips
Small things that matter once you’re on site
Wear proper footwear. Do not go in slippers.
Bring water. There are no stores inside the area.
Bring a flashlight or fully charged phone.
Travel with a companion or guide if it’s your first time.
Respect the area and do not leave trash behind.
Connectivity
Plan as if you will be offline
There is little to no mobile signal in most parts of Hacienda Maria.
You may find piso wifi machines in nearby barangays. These are small internet machines where you insert a PHP 1 coin and get around 10 to 15 minutes of internet access.
It is basic and slow, but useful for messaging or quick checks if needed.
Food & Where to Eat After Your Trip
No restaurants inside Hacienda Maria itself
There are no restaurants or food stalls inside Hacienda Maria. It is a natural, undeveloped area, so you will not find menus, eateries, or places to buy meals once you are already inside.
Where to eat after the hike
Weber Lodge & Resort is located in the same barangay as Hacienda Maria and has an in-house restaurant with beachfront views, ideal after the trek.
Palmelia Beach Resort offers a more premium private dining experience. It is not a walk-in restaurant. Food must be pre-ordered, and a dedicated beachfront table is prepared for your group. Prior booking is required.
Banwa Boutique & Bistro, located in the town plaza, is one of the most recommended places by locals if you want to head back down and properly recharge after the trip.
Bring light snacks and water before your hike, then plan your proper meal after the adventure, not during.

Final Thoughts
Not for everyone, but memorable for the right kind of traveller
Hacienda Maria is not for everyone. If you’re looking for convenience, comfort, and easy access, this is not it. But if you want something quiet, real, and different from the usual beach experience, this is one of the best places to explore in Buruanga.
Why it stands out
It shows that Buruanga is more than coastline. It also has inland adventure, silence, and a side of the town that many visitors never get to see.
